Divorce cases going up in Sarawak

MIRI - Sarawak has recorded a total of 1,832 divorce cases, the fourth highest in Malaysia between 1991-2000 period.
According to statistics, the ratio of Muslim divorce in Sarawak was 10.2 per cent higher than the civil divorce.

There was a total of 5,944 cases of Muslim divorces reported in Sarawak between 1990-August 2003.

A study on single mothers of the lower socio-economic strata in Sarawak revealed that the major causes of the marital fragmentation were extra-marital affairs of partners.

The most cited reason for divorce was men working away from home.

Other factors include financial insecurities resulting in frequent quarrels over money, domestic and sexual abuse, interference of in-laws, incompatibility, alcoholism and drug abuse.
