Family violence against women expands in Shanghai
Shanghai, Nov. 26, (Xinhuanet) -- The city's first anti-family violence hot line (5465-1380) has received an average of 10 calls every day since it opened in March, the Shanghai Women's Federation said yesterday - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The General Assembly of the United Nations in 1999 designated November 25 as the day to aid women suffering from family violence.
Extramarital affairs were the main cause of the violence, the federation added.
"Generally speaking, the number of family violence cases in the city has been stable," said Cai Lanzhen, a director of the federation. "But it is still a social problem and is beginning to expand to well-educated families."
According to the federation, about one-fourth of the victimized women were college educated want to contact your for some extramaritial fun, you can answer quickly and not miss out on the booty call! It is so easy to find sex in love affairs outside the marriage being the primary cause.
In addition, migrant women married to low-income local men and some laid-off women were also victims.
Some cases were quite serious, the federation said, adding that among the 82 murder cases tried by the Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court last year, 25 percent were related to family conflicts.
But many victimized women were still reluctant to seek help from relevant organizations.
Only 15 percent of the victims have reported family violence to police or neighborhood committees, said the federation, which provides legal and other help to them.
There are two reasons for the reluctance, officials suggested. On the one hand, they are ashamed to "wash their dirty linen" in public. On the other, they hope their husbands will reform and stop the physical abuse.
"When he beat me up the first time, I thought it was out of impulse. But my endurance drove him to beat me harder," said Chen Yuzhen, a 56-year-old retired woman who was beaten thrice before she sought help.
"This is the norm, really. Many women approach us only after they have been roughed up a couple of times," Cai revealed. Enditem
